Hidden Fees for Resellers: The Shipping and Fee Changes to Know Before the Holidays

Ship-by dates, label-class charges, eBay and Whatnot fee changes, and the Texas fee tax, in the order they hit a reseller's holiday season.

If the holidays are your busy season, this is the year to watch the small costs. Several of them change right in the middle of the rush: eBay's currency conversion charge went up October 14, Whatnot's Premier Shop discount ends November 1, Whatnot starts charging weight adjustments to your ledger November 4, Texas sellers are still paying tax on platform fees, and the carriers' last ship-by dates land the week before Christmas.

None of these is big on one sale. Repeated across every order you ship in December, they're the gap between the profit you think you made and the one that lands in the bank.

Here's how each one shows up across a reseller's season, from the auction bid to the payout, with real-world examples and what to do about each. Every date and rate links to the carrier, platform or state page we read on October 16, 2026. Rules change, so check the link before you lean on it.

Where do hidden costs start? Before you even buy

Picture a lamp at an auction across the country. The auction house hands you a list of preferred shippers, which are independent companies, and the quote comes back at $800. Two things can drive a number like that. One is crating: fragile glass, detailed metalwork or an odd shape can't go in a standard cardboard box, and a custom wooden crate takes labor and materials. The other is handling fees some shippers add on top, knowing you're bound to get the item off the auction floor.

That shipping number sets your maximum bid. If your total budget for the lamp is $1,000 and shipping is $800, you can't bid more than $200, before any buyer's premium. Bid $600 without checking, win, and you're on the hook for $1,400. If fall auctions are where you stock up for the holidays, get the shipping quote in writing before you bid, not after you win.

Whatever the shipping costs, it's part of what you paid for the item. Write it down with the purchase on day one, so the profit on that piece is real when it sells.

Why do weight and size matter more this November?

Because Whatnot starts charging you for weight adjustments in the middle of the holiday shows, and its $12.99 Flat Rate price is still temporary.

Flat Rate pricing. Whatnot's Help Center (opens in a new tab) says the temporary $12.99 Flat Rate price runs through at least December 9, 2026, later than the November 1 end date it first announced. Whatnot says it will give at least one month's notice before the price changes. That covers most of the holiday shows, but it's still temporary. If you've been setting your max shipping around $12.99, watch for that notice and recheck it against what the real label will cost.

Carrier adjustments. Whatnot says (opens in a new tab) that starting November 4, 2026, weight-based carrier adjustments on Whatnot-generated USPS labels will be charged to your Whatnot ledger for shipments sent on or after that date. Whatnot will keep covering other adjustments, like incorrect dimensions and incorrect hazmat labeling, for now.

At Marissa's Home, I add the weight and measurements to each item as it goes from sourcing into inventory, so I know what shipping will cost before it's ever listed. That's how I set up my Whatnot shipping profiles, and it has saved both me and my customers a lot of headache and money. With weight adjustments landing on your ledger from November 4, that step matters more than ever: weigh items before you list, pick a shipping profile that matches the real weight, and check the packed weight before you generate the label.

Fall 2026 fee changes timeline: October 14, eBay currency conversion charge rises from 3% to 3.25% for US sellers; November 1, Whatnot's Premier Shop commission discount ends; November 4, Whatnot weight-based carrier adjustments start landing on the seller's ledger.

What are the platforms taking from each holiday sale?

I was talking to a seller the other day and they said that they were ready to quit Poshmark over its commission. That frustration is real, and the fix isn't leaving in a hurry. It's knowing what you actually net on each platform before you price your holiday stock.

Poshmark. Poshmark's fee page (opens in a new tab) says that for sales under $15 it takes a flat $2.95 commission, and for sales of $15 or more it takes 20%. That flat fee matters for stocking stuffers: on a $10 item, $2.95 is 29.5% of the sale. On a $40 gift, 20% is $8. Price small items with the flat fee in mind, or bundle them.

eBay. eBay's fee page (opens in a new tab) says that from October 14, 2026, the currency conversion charge for sellers registered in the US increases from 3% to 3.25%. If holiday shoppers overseas buy from you, it shows up as a slightly thinner payout rather than a line you'd notice: on $1,000 converted, that's $32.50 instead of $30.00.

Whatnot. Premier Shop sellers have had an extra 10% off their commission tier rate through October 31. Whatnot's seller fees page (opens in a new tab) says: “Starting November 1, Premier Shop no longer includes a commission discount.” Your rate then depends only on your sales tier, right as holiday shows pick up.

Why is there Texas sales tax on my platform fees?

Because Texas has been treating certain marketplace services as taxable data processing. In the Comptroller's own words (opens in a new tab), under that reading “the government taxed the fee a seller pays to a platform like Amazon, eBay, or Etsy.” Poshmark's fee page (opens in a new tab) also says that as of October 1, 2025, sellers located in Texas see an additional Texas Seller Fee Tax deducted from their earnings.

On September 30, 2026, Comptroller Don Huffines signed an executive order to end that. It isn't in effect yet: the order directs the agency to publish a proposed amendment to Rule 3.330 in the Texas Register, followed by a 30-day public comment period. Until the new rule is final, the tax keeps showing up, so it will be on your holiday sales. The announcement doesn't mention refunds of what's already been collected.

Keep a record of every fee and the tax charged on it. Your tax pro will want both numbers. Check with your tax pro about your own situation.

Texas sellers, tax on platform fees: since October 1, 2025, marketplace fees taxed as data processing; September 30, 2026, the Comptroller signs an order directing a rule change; right now, rulemaking is under way and the tax keeps applying until the new rule is final.

Why did the post office charge more for my mailer?

A seller asked this fall why the post office flagged a bubble mailer they'd sent with a letter-rate label. It's one of the easiest holiday mistakes to make when you're packing a pile of small orders at the kitchen table.

USPS rules (opens in a new tab) say a flat-size piece has to be flexible, uniformly thick and no more than 3/4 inch thick. A piece that's rigid, or lumpy enough to vary by more than 1/4 inch, is a parcel and has to pay parcel prices. So the stamp math that works for a card doesn't work for a Pyrex lid wrapped in bubble wrap. Buy a package label, USPS Ground Advantage or better, and check the service before you pay, every time. In December, a package that gets kicked back costs you days you may not have before the cutoff.

Side-by-side diagram: a flat, flexible envelope mails as a letter with First-Class stamps; a bubble mailer with an item inside is a package that needs USPS Ground Advantage or better.

Another seller asked about printing. If you sell on eBay without a printer at home, eBay lets you choose a QR code (opens in a new tab) instead of printing the label, where that option is available, and you scan it at a participating drop-off location.

Carrier charges can also arrive after the fact. Another seller found a $45 charge on a FedEx invoice weeks after shipping a box they'd put inside a poly bag. Measure the packed box and declare the real dimensions up front, and record any later charge against the sale it came from, so it doesn't quietly come out of your holiday profit.

When is the last day to ship for Christmas 2026?

Holiday buyers are often buying gifts, and a gift that shows up after Christmas can turn into a return. These are the carriers' own recommended dates, not guarantees. Set your listing cutoffs a day or two earlier, so you're not paying for a faster service to keep a promise.

December 2026 calendar marking carrier-recommended last days to ship: FedEx Ground Economy Dec 15, USPS Ground Advantage Dec 17, Priority Mail Dec 18, Priority Mail Express Dec 19, FedEx 2Day Dec 22, FedEx overnight Dec 23.

USPS (opens in a new tab) (recommended send-by dates for delivery before December 25, contiguous U.S.):

  • USPS Ground Advantage: Thursday, December 17
  • First-Class Mail: Thursday, December 17
  • Priority Mail: Friday, December 18
  • Priority Mail Express: Saturday, December 19

Shipping to or from Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico or the U.S. territories? USPS gives no single Ground Advantage date there. It says those packages have a service expectation of 10 days or more, so check the estimated delivery date for the ZIP code and ship earlier.

FedEx (PDF, opens in a new tab) (last recommended ship dates for delivery by December 24):

  • FedEx Ground Economy: Tuesday, December 15
  • FedEx 2Day and 2Day AM: Tuesday, December 22
  • FedEx First Overnight, Priority Overnight and Standard Overnight: Wednesday, December 23

FedEx Ground and Home Delivery dates depend on how many transit days your ZIP-to-ZIP route takes, so look up your route before you set a cutoff.

UPS hasn't posted a last-day-to-ship list for 2026 on its holiday schedule page (opens in a new tab) as of October 16. What it does say: on December 24, pickup for Air services happens only if you prearranged it by December 18, and there's no UPS Ground pickup that day.

How do I know what I actually kept?

Your profit is the sale price and the shipping the buyer paid, minus the label, packing, platform and payment fees, any conversion charge or tax on fees, and what you paid for the item, including what it cost to get it home, clean it up and prepare it for sale. Every cost in this post is one more line in that sum. A fee change you never write down still comes out of the payout; it just disappears into it.

Example receipt for one item: $48 sale plus $9.50 buyer-paid shipping, minus label, mailer, fees, item cost from a three-piece lot and lot shipping share, leaving $29.15 kept. Labeled example numbers only.

If you want to check one item right now, our free Profit Calculator takes the sale price, what you paid, platform fees and shipping and packaging, and gives you the profit and margin. It asks for your name and email before it shows the result.

Knowing what you keep on an item also tells you the lowest offer you can say yes to. Our guide on how to handle offers on antiques and vintage shows how to set that walk-away number before a buyer asks.

Where SOLD Now fits

I'm a reseller too, and shipping surprises like these are the reason we built weight and measurements into every item in SOLD Now's inventory. You add an item's weight and dimensions as it goes from sourcing into inventory, and SOLD Now gives you the cubic inches, so you can see what shipping will cost before you ever list it. Inventory is on the Gold plan ($39.99 a month), and every paid plan starts with a 30-day free trial, so you can weigh and measure your holiday stock before you decide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the last day to ship USPS Ground Advantage for Christmas 2026?

USPS recommends Thursday, December 17, 2026 for delivery before December 25 within the contiguous U.S. Priority Mail is December 18 and Priority Mail Express is December 19. These are recommended dates, not guarantees.

Can I mail a bubble mailer with stamps?

Only if it still qualifies as a flat: flexible, uniformly thick and no more than 3/4 inch thick. A mailer that's rigid or lumpy because of what's inside is a parcel under USPS rules and pays parcel prices, so buy a package label.

How much is eBay's currency conversion charge now?

For sellers registered in the US, eBay's page says it increases from 3% to 3.25% from October 14, 2026.

Does Texas still charge sales tax on marketplace seller fees?

For now, yes. The September 30, 2026 order starts a rule change; the tax applies until the amended rule is final. Check with your tax pro.

When does Whatnot's $12.99 Flat Rate pricing end?

Whatnot says the temporary $12.99 price runs through at least December 9, 2026, and that it will give at least one month's notice before the price changes.
